The Editors @ Webster Hall - 9.7.07

...or why I learned to hate Webster Hall (and stupid traffic) but grew to love Dunkin' Donuts.

So I had tixs to see the Editors tonight. I've seen them before and they put on quite a good show. It was unfortunately at one of my least favorite venues, Webster Hall, ye of massive disco parties and death trap exits (and early curfews). But I like the band enough to put up with all the nonsense. I tried (unsuccessfully) to find out when the band would take the stage. After surfing the web for a while and then calling W.H.'s concert line number, which gave today's show as being Yo La Tengo on April whatever (way to update your info, idiots), I gave up. But figured they might go on around 9:30 or so. That's sort of typical for NYC shows.

But as has become a bit of a tradition, my concert buddy and i were running late...and then caught quite a bit of Friday night traffic as well. And just after we found parking, i spotted an incredibly stern glorified meter maid about to give us a ticket for illegal parking (we thought it was ok), so had to move again. End result: we got to Webster Hall at about 10:30. Ok, we'll have missed probably half the show, but we'll cope. We walk on over and noticed a huge line waiting to get in, and it looks like pretty much the entire juvenile population of Koreatown decided to queue up in front. I didn't realize the Editors were so big with Asian American teens, but what do I know?

Yeah, they were queuing up for a completely different thing - Webster Hall always has multiple events going on. We walk up to the other door, get carded, get a lovely paper bracelet and then a complimentary tix:

We thought that was weird - 'Why were they giving us tixs to get into the place?' We had our own will call tixs to pick up.

So we make our way up the stairs and end up having to get out of the way as there are quite a few people exiting with instruments. Ok, likely the opening band roadies carrying out their equipment. One usher guy tries to get us to come on in to the limbo party to the right...er, we say no thanks, we're here for the band. And then we notice a computer print out sheet affixed to the doors, announcing the stage times for the opening bands and the Editors. Editors - 9 pm.

That can't be good.

I go up to the cashier and ask where I can pick up my will call tixs (there's usually someone right at the door just checking credit cards). And she (very compassionately I might add) says 'They're done. They're leaving now. The show started at 7.' At which point, we just both (me mostly) just let out the proverbial 'Aaaaaarrrrghhh!'

I'm always looking for firsts, and this was definitely one - we completely missed the show. I know we were late, but goddammit, I didn't think we'd miss out on everything. It's a good thing my friend and i go to shows a lot, since after the initial deep growl of dissatisfaction, we just proceeded to piss ourselves laughing.

And then looked for the nearest bar - couldn't find a non-ritzy/hoity-toity one. I then spotted the ritziest Dunkin' Donuts ever. With outdoor cafe tables. And that's where we went instead and had a hilarious chat while sitting at the bar facing 2nd Avenue and sipping iced coffees. Listening to sometimes fun, sometimes maddeningly annoying electro-dance music over the loud speakers.
